24 hours to surgery!

Posted by socalrunnergirl on July 14, 2010

My knee surgery is fast approaching and I'm excited to get it over with and start rehab.  When I first injured my knee I tore my MCL and ACL which help support each other and it made for a very sore and unstable knee.  Not a lot of pain unless I was stretching – but definitely achy quite often and swelling a bit every time I worked it out.

Those first two weeks in the brace locked out at 30 degrees caused me to lose a lot of muscle strength and flexibility.  By the time I had my first PT appointment about 4-5 weeks ago I could barely bend my knee to 57 degrees, had a really bad limp, and a knee that could barely leg press 20 pounds less than my strong knee.

The idea is to go into surgery as strong as possible for a faster recovery.  Last night I was able to leg press the SAME amount of weight on both legs.  My PT measured my knee flexion at 120 degrees on Monday.  Not perfect but good enough for surgery and, I think, a remarkable improvement since the injury :)  My limp is almost gone and my MCL is starting to feel more stable.  All this and my positive attitude should help me sail though my recovery!

Oh – and congrats to all Badwater finishers.  You are all truly bad asses for finishing that race (or even attempting it)!!

Jessica, you have such patience. I admire you for that. My doc. office called to say he wanted me in the office to discuss my xrays, and I begged the lady to tell me just a little (which supposidly is not bad; I am fortunate). Still, you seem so cool and calm over this. That is an awesome attribute. Best of luck on your surgery.

Wishing that all goes well for you in surgery and that the recovery is swift and as painless as it can be.

One’s universe might fall apart but as long as one keeps a great attitude in life, it is what really matter! You inspire great optimism!
I hope you recovery is painless and fast.
