Something I never much experienced until doing longish runs in the cold here in Portland – blurry vision. I haven't been to the eye doctor in a while and plan to go soon, but I was pleased to recently learn this is not all that uncommon. A thread started on the Ultra list and after reading there and doing some research I discovered that endurance running, high altitude and cold can all create this effect. Very interesting. I'll run it by my doctor whenever I manage to get in there. It does seem to only happen when I run more than 5 or 6 miles in temps below 40.
I've also decided on a road marathon! Yes marathons on the road hurt. But I found out about the Foot Traffic Flat marathon from my new Twitter friend Amy Courts who wanted to run it and it looks fun. It's on a scenic island with good support, decent price and perfect time of year (July 4th). The race is in 12 weeks though so I need to get moving! Tomorrow after softball practice I'm hoping to get in 7-9 miles of dirt running. At least I'm not going from 0 to 26.2 miles in 12 weeks
Happy Running & Dirty Feet,
Jessica

Hello,
I noticed your post on corneal edema and was curious if you’ve been able to prevent or counter it’s effects while running. I ask because I’m training for a couple ultras, doing a fair amount of trail running at altitude (often in the cold), and experiencing blurry vision from cornea edema on a regular basis. My vision takes hours to clear up and I’m starting to wonder how I’ll be able to run some of the longer races I have planned. I’ve seen several doctors now, performed numerous tests, and tried different eye drops on long runs but nothing seems to help. Along with finding your post I have found other references to distance runners having this problem, which is encouraging, though I haven’t seen any ways of preventing it yet.
Thanks for any info you might have!
Heath
Yep – I found a fix for it – moving to San Diego
Seriously though, I never found anything to help so I can’t be of much help to you… good luck!
