A Winner After All

Posted by socalrunnergirl on October 22, 2008

So Nike called her "a" winner after all.  Not "the" winner.  A good move.  Even better is that Nike is doing away with the "elite" field for next year’s race.  We can only hope other big races do the same.  After all, if the races are two separate races, then why are they run at roughly the same time on the same day?  The problem didn’t lie purely with Nike, but lies with governing bodies like the IAAF and USATF whose rules both clearly state that gun time, not chip time, determines awards in a race.  The Nike race was a USATF race, so because of this gun time had to rule.  I think the IAAF and USATF need to change their rules to let chip time win.  What’s with that anyway?

Well, congratulations to Arien O’Connell, who is not THE winner but at least was named A winner.
