Lots of states are now enacting laws that prohibit the use of cell phones (talking or texting) while driving. While I agree that it can be distracting – I’m not sure we need specific laws. How about it just being illegal to drive distracted period? He’s my list of things that as far as I know are still legal to do in place of texting while driving:
- Sleeping
- Eating
- Drinking (not alcohol)
- Brushing your hair
- Putting on makeup
- Reading a book or Newspaper
- Looking at your passenger while talking to them and not watching the road
- Setting your GPS destination
- Watching a DVD
- Using your iPad (or laptop computer)
- Letting your dog (or cat) jump around, including sitting in your lap
- Taking pictures (from your camera – not your cell phone)
Aside from #1, I’ve seen or done every item on this list. Yes somehow they are all still legal and talking on your cell phone is not. Go figure…

Some of these make a lot of sense, especially using any kind of electronics while driving. Then again, wouldn’t GPS computers embedded in cars fall under the distraction issue too?
